April 16th | Professionalising Leadership in ECEC: From Roles to Real Capacity

Moderated by Géraldine Libreau, European Commission

Thursday, April 16th, 2026

14:00-15:30 CET

Across Europe, expectations for leaders in early childhood education and care (ECEC) are growing. Leaders are expected to support staff, strengthen pedagogical practice, engage families, navigate complex systems, and drive reform. Yet in many countries leadership remains poorly defined, insufficiently recognised, and rarely supported through structured training.

Drawing on the latest work of the European Commission Working Group on Early Childhood Education and Care and its report “Leadership in ECEC: Competences and Training”, this event explores what it takes to move from informal expectations to real professional leadership capacity — through clear competence profiles, training pathways, and stronger career structures.
