CHAVORE: Promoting Young Children's Mental Health and Well-Being

CHAVORE is a self-paced learning offering that supports early childhood professionals in promoting the mental health and emotional well-being of young children (0–6), with a strong focus on Roma children and other children in vulnerable situations. Grounded in Psychological First Aid and inclusive, culturally responsive practice, the course combines reflective learning with practical tools that can be directly applied in everyday work with children and families. This course is offered in multiple languages, including: English, Albanian, Croatian, Hungarian, Slovak, Slovenian

What this offering explores 

This offering explores how early childhood practitioners can strengthen children’s emotional well-being, resilience, and sense of safety through responsive, inclusive, and trauma-informed practice.

Key areas include: 
  • Understanding young children’s mental health and emotional well-being in everyday contexts

  • Applying Psychological First Aid principles in early childhood settings

  • Supporting children’s emotional expression, self-regulation, and resilience

  • Building trusting, responsive relationships with children and families

  • Reflecting on practitioners’ own well-being, attitudes, and professional role

  • Using practical activity cards and implementation guidance to translate learning into daily practice

  • Working in culturally sensitive ways, with specific attention to Roma communities and inclusion

The course combines self-paced learning sessions with practical tools and reflection prompts to support sustainable change in practice.

This offering is designed for

  • Early childhood educators and practitioners working with children aged 0–6

  • Home visitors, social workers, and family support professionals

  • Professionals working with Roma children and families

  • Trainers and facilitators in early childhood development and well-being

  • NGOs, community-based organisations, and services supporting vulnerable families

No prior experience with mental health or Psychological First Aid is required.

This course was developed by the CHAVORE consortium. Built on the expertise of the International Step by Step Association (ISSA) and its Romani Early Years Network (REYN) initiative, CHAVORE leverages a transnational partnership across five countries to develop inclusive and responsive early childhood education and care.
Funded by the European Commission, the consortium is comprised of ISSA members, led by Educational Research Institute (Slovenia), and includes Open Academy Step by Step (OASbS), Partners Hungary Foundation (PH), Skola dokoran - Wide Open School (SD), and Kosovo Education Center (KEC), and the ISSA Hub.
